STELP is helping since
2021
Shortly after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, together with civilfleet-support e. V. and Leavenoonebehind, as part of the Kabul Airlift, we help bring particularly vulnerable people out of the country. With some we have succeeded, with many not.
And despite the waning media coverage, the situation on the ground has neither stabilized nor improved for many sections of the population. In particular, the suspension of most international aid projects after the Taliban took power has hit thousands of families, widows and orphans outside the major cities particularly hard. These people are suffering from an acute famine that was dominating the country before the Taliban took power and which has been exacerbated by last year’s drought. In line with our slogan “supporter on site”, Serkan set off on an aid mission to Afghanistan with two companions at the beginning of December 2021, in June 2022 and in November 2023, despite the dangerous situation.
During the missions, he and helpers were able to distribute basic food and medical products to thousands of people both in Kabul and in rural areas.
In addition, together with reliable local partners, we were able to build a well near Mazar-e Sharif, which now supplies drinking water to part of the population.
Serkan spoke in detail about the experiences of his first assignment in December 2021 in our STELP podcast, which can be found on all common platforms and also here:
In October 2023, a strong earthquake shook the area around Herat. In November 2023, STELP founder Serkan Eren and his team were on the ground distributing relief supplies to those affected.
The team also traveled to the Afghan-Pakistani border. There, 1.7 million Afghans are currently having to leave Pakistan due to a wave of deportations. “The mood on the ground is extremely tense. The entire border is like a refugee camp for over 100 kilometers,” reports Serkan Eren.
According to the Taliban, over 250,000 people have already arrived at the border crossing at Torkham alone.* The Taliban and some aid organisations have set up thousands of tents, but these are nowhere near enough. “People are currently living out in the open, they have no blankets, they have no roof over their heads,” says Eren.
The Stuttgart-based aid organization has therefore set up a tent village with 180 tents for families with children, pregnant women and sick people.
