Burkina Faso faces numerous challenges that shape people’s daily lives. For years, the country has suffered from political instability, armed violence, and terrorist attacks. Many people have been forced to leave their homes and are now displaced within their own country. For families, this often means losing their homes, their source of income, access to education, and the security of their familiar surroundings.
At the same time, economic uncertainties and the country’s heavy reliance on agriculture, cotton production, and mining hinder stable development. More than 80 percent of the population works in agriculture, mostly for subsistence—but extreme weather events are increasingly taking their toll (BMZ, 2023). Prolonged droughts are drying out the soil, while heavy rains cause flooding and render fields unusable.
Environmental problems are also exacerbating the situation: Pollutants from mining and the uncontrolled burning of waste are contaminating the soil and endangering people’s health. In addition, many areas suffer from inadequate drinking water and sanitation services. Rural regions, in particular, lack clean water and hygienic sanitation facilities, which contributes to the spread of disease and further worsens living conditions.
For children, this situation is particularly unsettling: displacement, poverty, a lack of infrastructure, and unstable living conditions make it difficult for them to access education and lead a safe, secure daily life.
