The earthquakes have particularly devastated the regions in the north-east of Syria where internally displaced people seek shelter. Around 4.5 million people currently live in opposition-controlled areas. The region around Idlib was hit hard. Warm winter clothing, food and medical care were in short supply there even before the devastating earthquakes in the camps for refugees. The people there live in horrible conditions.
Together with our partner Mehad e.V., we bought three truckloads of wood pellets and three trucks full of food in Sarmada and packed parcels for the people in a camp in Salqin. “People have been sitting in their tents starving for three days. In addition, the cold is giving them a hard time,” reports STELP founder Serkan Eren from on site. Mostly widows and orphans live in the camp. “It is bad. The camp residents already had nothing before the earthquake.
But now the camps are even more crowded and food is even more scarce,” explains Serkan Eren. “The situation on site is dramatic,” Eren continues. We also provide financial support to our partner Mehad e.V. to operate mobile clinics, which they use to travel from camp to camp. They stay in a camp for five to seven hours at a time in order to be able to provide initial medical care to those in particular need.
Together with our nationwide partner organisations from the networkCivilian Crisis Unit and the NGO Our Bridgewe sent eight trucks to the earthquake zone in north-eastern Syria. We financed a truck and were able to supply around 1000 families with relief supplies. On board are basic food, blankets and mattresses, but also working materials such as gloves, helmets, jackhammers and generators.
After the convoy arrived in Afrin, the relief supplies were distributed to those in need.
Aid transport with activist Helen Fares
In addition, with journalist and activist Helen Fares, whose family is from Syria, we started a transport of relief supplies from Lebanon to Syria. The transport included baby milk, diapers, blankets, medical products and hygiene items.
