When the economy and healthcare system of Venezuela collapsed in 2015, over five million Venezuelans fled to the border regions. According to UNHCR, considering these numbers, it is currently the largest migration crisis in the world. The situation of Venezuelan women is particularly distressing in this context. Human rights activists report a significant increase in sexual assaults and human trafficking, as well as a rising rate of abortions.
Together with our partners NATAN andCadena, we are establishing a support center for migrants in Cúcuta, the Colombian border city with Venezuela. This three-year project will be led by a local medical team and international volunteers. STELP provides financial support to the project. Additionally, we are providing a critically needed ultrasound machine to enable the necessary examinations to be conducted.
The primary focus is on providing initial medical care to refugee women and children. Sadly, the grim reality is that among the women, there are numerous victims of sexual assault who are in urgent need of gynecological treatments. Additionally, the center will also provide psychological support because the experiences need to be processed in order for the emotional wounds to heal.
