Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Almost two-thirds of the people live below the poverty line. The civil war (1993-2005) left a heavy mark on the country and the consequences are still being felt today. Economic development is severely hampered by ongoing political uncertainty and recurring crop failures caused by climate change. Most of the people in Burundi live from agriculture, which is why their small farms in particular are vulnerable to extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. In May 2024, torrential rain and severe flooding caused devastating damage. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes, and roads, fields and entire towns were flooded. STELP founder Serkan Eren was on site with a team to provide emergency aid.
