The Philippines, an island nation in Southeast Asia with over 7,000 islands, is known for its breathtaking landscapes and welcoming people. Despite its natural wealth, many people in the Philippines struggle with major challenges. Around a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line, particularly in rural areas and in urban settlements.
Although access to education is enshrined in law and is free of charge for children, in reality there are many obstacles in the way: overcrowded classrooms, inadequate equipment and long distances to school make the situation more difficult. In rural regions, many children drop out of school early in order to support their families financially. Many families do not have enough money for a roof over their heads and are therefore homeless or living out of garbage dumps.
