STELP is helping since
2020
In Nepal, one in four people live in extreme poverty. Every third child in Nepal is forced to work, with many of them working under dangerous conditions. Due to the severe earthquakes in Nepal in 2015, some families were no longer able to adequately provide for their children. Some of them no longer have homes and have been living in tents or makeshift shelters made of corrugated metal since then. Frequently, girls were forced to drop out of school and work in factories. The situation for the children and their parents has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since June 2020, we have been supporting the affiliated Esslingen association “Surya Kiran – ein Sonnenstrahl für Kinder e.V.” in financing the operation of their children’s home in Kathmandu, Nepal. There, 30 disadvantaged and needy girls have found a new home. They were living in and off garbage, and were at risk of child labor, early marriage, and being trafficked to brothels in India. Under the protection of the children’s home and the care of their loving caregivers, they can now grow up in a safe environment and receive both school education and vocational training. A loving home with good care, time to play, and space to learn aims to provide them with a hopeful future.
