2020
In Uganda, honey is considered liquid gold. There, thanks to floral diversity, beekeeping plays a key role in helping the country achieve middle-income status by 2040. However, the majority of local beekeepers are small-scale producers. They keep their colonies in low-yielding hives such as hollow tree trunks. This leads to poor harvests and thus little income.
Together with the Stuttgart-based Stay Foundation,we have been financially supporting a project in Uganda since the end of 2020, in which smallholder farmers are trained to become “ecopreneurs”. They are trained in beekeeping by the social business Golden Bees, provided with modern hives and technical support. Golden Bees buys the honey and wax from the beekeepers, processes it and distributes it in Uganda, Kenya and probably soon in Europe.
So far, 120 beekeepers have already been trained, who can significantly increase their family’s income through the proceeds from the sale of the harvest and make a fair contribution to the costs of the programme, depending on their success. The programme has already helped over 720 people find a way out of poverty.
We are very pleased to be entering new territory through our cooperation with Stay: sustainable development work. Due to the high degree of self-organisation of the small farmers, we hope that the funds used will have a great impact.
The Stay Foundation pursues the goal of sustainably improving the living situation of people in the countries of the equator region with the help of development loans and scholarships.
On 9th March, 2021, the Stuttgarter Zeitung reported about the project. Read the article here:
