Volunteer abroad
BECOME ACTIVE ABROAD
WITH STELP
Would you like to volunteer on Lesvos? Then you’ve come to the right place. Here you can find out what requirements you need to meet to volunteer and former volunteers provide insights into their assignments. You are also welcome to attend our next information event on 22. May at 6 pm. Simply register by e-mail.
What you should bring with you
Empathy
The situation for the local people is not easy. Empathy is important in order to maintain a respectful relationship with the center visitors.
Resilience
Working at the community camp can be very physically and mentally demanding. You should therefore be resilient and be able to assess yourself well.
Personal initiative
The Paréa Center welcomes every volunteer who can contribute their own ideas. Independent work is a prerequisite.
Communication skills
As many of the visitors speak a different language, your communication skills, especially in English, are required.
What you can expect on site:
You support our partners from #Leavenoonebehind or Europe Cares at the Parea Center. The minimum stay on site is four weeks. You will work together with other international volunteers and of course be in constant contact with the camp residents. You work daily from 9-15/16 hrs. The camp is closed at weekends and you have time off. On site, you usually live with other volunteers in an apartment in Mytilini, about 5 km from the Paréa Center. However, this cannot be guaranteed as rooms are not always available. In this case you will have to find your own accommodation.
The tasks vary depending on the area and time of year. They range from registering refugees and organizing joint activities to handing out food, toiletries and clothing. Your tasks will be discussed in advance with the local volunteer coordinator and will also depend on which partner organization you are working with. Europe Cares, for example, focuses more on community work, whereas #Leavenoonebehind focuses more on the laundry or the free store.
