In the first days after the earthquake, we set up our situation centre in Adana. This is the last big city before the disaster areas where the supply chains still work. There we first bought relief supplies such as blankets, water, baby food and hygiene articles and distribute them in Turkey in the Hatay region and in Gaziantep, among other places.
About a week after the devastating earthquakes, the needs of local people are changing. The chance of finding buried people alive is getting smaller and smaller. Many aid groups specializing in the recovery of earthquake victims are leaving the disaster areas.
“Chaos is becoming the norm,” says Serkan Eren. The next phase also begins for STELP. We are now planning a larger sustainable project in Turkey to support families in the medium and long term.
“Even though the attention will soon be gone, the suffering here will remain for a long time. Entire cities simply won’t exist anymore,” reports Serkan Eren from on site.
