STELP supports new project in Iraq

Good news: Starting this year, we are funding three teachers at an education center that promotes education for children and adults in northern Iraq.
The focus is on Yazidi internally displaced persons who fled their homeland, the Shingal region of Iraq, from the Islamic State over nine years ago. The refugee camps in northern Iraq are in poor condition and offer miserable living conditions and few prospects for the future, which is why many Yazidi internally displaced persons have settled in villages abandoned by their previous inhabitants. These villages are away from the public eye and the reach of large aid organizations and government assistance.
Sustainable future prospects for Yazidis
One such village is Sina, where the “HELIN” education center is located thanks to Hand für Hand e. V. The center includes a kindergarten and an elementary school for the village children, who have lessons there in the mornings and afternoons. In the afternoon, sports activities, further education courses and project work are also offered for older children and young people. Adults also benefit from further education opportunities such as sewing courses, language lessons and literacy courses for women.
Our aim is to use the education center to improve the living conditions of Yazidi internally displaced persons in their own country and to create sustainable future prospects for them. The focus is on the education of children and the literacy of women, who become more independent by learning to read and write and increase their chances of finding work in their home country.
