In India, the topic of female menstruation is still a taboo, especially in rural areas. Many young women suffer from widespread stigmas and myths that shape society’s perception of their menstruation. In these regions, many girls are even forced into marriage and confronted with pregnancies at a very young age. The frequent poverty in these families also prevents access to necessary menstrual products, which means that the girls miss up to four days of school a month – which can be up to a whole month over the course of a year. These frequent absences significantly impair their learning progress and many girls end up dropping out of school altogether.
