‘I was told that you have more rights in Europe, that you are treated better here. What I have experienced so far shows that this is not true. I’m just a number, nobody cares about me and my rights. I’m not a human being here.’ These sentences come from a woman from Afghanistan who lived in the Mavrovouni camp on Lesbos. Her words reflect what many refugees in Greece feel.
Since STELP was founded, one of our priorities has been to support refugees. We are currently active on the mainland as well as on some islands in Greece.
STELP supports partners in the provision of medical care for refugees, in the provision of legal advice in the asylum process, in the operation of service stations (distribution of food, laundry service) and of so-called community centres. Places where visitors can forget their everyday lives for a short time while playing table football, table tennis or chess.
We work with these partners on site:
Community Center
– Be Aware and Share (Ioannina)
– Europe Cares (Lesvos)
Service stations
– LeaveNoOneBehind (Lesvos)
– Habibi Works (Ioannina)
Legal support
– Fenix (Lesvos and Athens)
Medical support
– Medical Volunteers International (Kos, Athens)
– Offene Arme (Chios)
– Northern Lights Aid (Kavala)
In the camps in Greece, people lack almost everything.
Even though the situation in Greece has been known for years, one thing is certain: support from aid organisations such as our local partners is still urgently needed. In the camps in Greece, people lack almost everything. We must not forget the people there!
