Four years ago, a huge detonation of fertiliser rocked the Lebanese capital, killing 207 people, injuring thousands and driving hundreds of thousands from their homes. This catastrophe exacerbated the already severe humanitarian and economic crisis in the country.
At the time of the explosion, Serkan was in Beirut to coordinate humanitarian projects in Lebanon. The extent to which this tragic event has influenced STELP’s work can be seen in today’s focus on acute emergency aid.
“The explosion in Beirut had a lasting impact on STELP. It was the first time we experienced first-hand how important fast, unbureaucratic emergency aid is and what those affected need most urgently in the first 48 hours after such a disaster,” says Serkan looking back.
He is on site again this year to visit our projects together with our supporter on site, Jad: the Mjaydel STELP Medical Centre in the south of Lebanon and refugee camps in the Beirut region and near the Syrian border in the north-east of the country. The current political instability and ongoing economic challenges are further exacerbating the situation for many people in Lebanon. Our aid on the ground and Serkan’s visit are not only a sign of remembrance, but also show that we are still there for the people of Lebanon.
