The ongoing climate change is increasingly bringing extreme weather conditions with it – including in the Indian region of Darjeeling.
In 2023, unexpectedly heavy rainfall hit the region with full force. Entire houses were washed away and livelihoods destroyed. The Holy Cross girls’ school in Sonada was hit particularly hard: the adjacent playground and load-bearing protective walls were unable to withstand the masses of water.
The school in India is in danger of closing
Around 2,000 girls attend the school – for many of them, it is more than just a place of education. Most of the girls come from poorer backgrounds. Their parents often work as day laborers on tea plantations. For these girls, school means the chance of a better future. But this opportunity is in jeopardy: without urgently needed renovation work, the school is threatened with closure.
Together with our partners, we are financially supporting the reconstruction of the school so that the girls of Sonada can continue to learn, grow and take their future into their own hands.
