Access to education continues to be a daily struggle for many children in Afghanistan. Many families lack the financial means to send their children to school. Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the situation has worsened dramatically, especially for girls: they are no longer allowed to attend public schools from the seventh grade onwards, and many educational institutions have been closed or destroyed. Despite these circumstances, courageous teachers and families are fighting to ensure that children – especially girls – are allowed to continue learning.
During his visit to Afghanistan last year, STELP founder Serkan Eren visited a secret girls’ school. Girls up to the 10th grade are taught there and learn English, for example. You can read more about this mission here.
We are building a school in the Afghan province of Logar
In order to continue to make education accessible to children in Afghanistan, STELP is now working with local partners to support the construction of a new school in Logar province. Where there are currently only unstable mud walls and the blackboard is set up on a makeshift table, six classrooms, two teachers’ rooms and sanitary facilities are to be built – a safe place to learn for children who currently have few prospects.
Once construction is complete, this school will be the only educational facility in the region. The school will pave the way out of poverty for the children – into a self-determined life.
