Around five weeks have passed since the devastating earthquakes in Morocco. Our project coordinator Oona was already on site a short time later and reported on a great extent of destruction and at least as great suffering of the affected people.
The remote villages in the Atlas Mountains posed a particular challenge, as transporting relief supplies to these regions was very difficult. But it also showed a great solidarity of the Moroccan population, which independently (although many people themselves were affected by the natural disaster) brought food to the affected areas.
Creating perspectives for those affected
Since the food supply is secure, we are focusing primarily on giving people the prospect of staying on site. The first measure was therefore the procurement of around 140 tents, which are relatively large and waterproof, but cannot be a permanent solution in view of the impending winter.
The next step now is to build longer-term housing options such as container villages. A first one is currently being built in the Talat N’Yaaqoub region. Further regions and container villages are already being planned. In this way, we want to give back a bit of quality of life and hope to the people affected.
At this point, a big thank you also goes to our partner organization Al Ofoq Charity Association.
