Around 200 people gathered at Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz last Tuesday on the occasion of World Refugee Day, following STELP’s call. After the serious boat accident off Greece, the authorities now expect more than 500 refugees dead. In order to draw attention to the situation of refugees in the Mediterranean Sea, STELP made a joint statement in the form of a silent protest.
The protesters laid on the ground with white sheets they had brought with them, making visible the drowned refugees in the Mediterranean.
Last week, a fishing cutter vessel about 30 meters long with about 700 people on board had sunk in international waters, about 50 nautical miles southwest of the coast. It had previously taken off from Libya and was heading for Italy. 104 people were rescued, while the ship took the remaining passengers with it into the depths of the sea.
