For many smallholder farmers in Uganda, it is difficult to get fair prices for their crops. A lack of processing capacity and dependence on middlemen often mean that, in the end, too little reaches those who do most of the work.
This is exactly where our project comes in: Together with our partners at the Stay Foundation, we are supporting local processing of corn into cornmeal and bran—so that smallholder farmers can become more self-reliant in the long term and more value is retained locally.
Greater local value creation in Uganda
The project has been underway for a few months now, and we have the first update for you: In the first two months of the year, approximately 66 tons of corn were purchased, and nearly half of that has already been processed and sold. In early March, an additional 42 tons of corn were purchased from smallholder farmers. Some of it will be stored, while the rest will be processed shortly.
By way of comparison: A total of 117.1 tons of corn was purchased in 2025. The fact that the purchase volume in the first quarter alone is already nearly on par with the total for the previous year represents a huge step forward—and a strong indication that the local infrastructure is working effectively.
