In May 204, heavy torrential rains and the resulting floods hit large parts of Burundi. Many people lost their livelihoods, including many women who earned their living from farming. Shortly after the floods, a small STELP team was on site to provide emergency aid. STELP also worked with the local NGO Kaz’O’zah and its founder Ange, as well as the Stiftung Entwicklungs-Zusammenarbeit Baden-Württemberg (SEZ) Stuttgart, to support the reconstruction of these women’s homes. Around 600 women were affected by the consequences of the floods, 120 of whom were supported as part of this project.
Ange from Burundi visits the STELP Office in Stuttgart
Last week, Ange from Burundi visited the STELP office in Stuttgart and reported on the current situation on the ground. It is now clear that as the floods have unfortunately not completely receded, the women affected cannot return to their home village.
The task now is to establish a permanent settlement in the previous transitional location. STELP will provide long-term support for this project so that the women there can once again develop an independent livelihood. In the meantime, many other NGOs have withdrawn from the area to focus on other crises. But it is precisely now that the local people need our support.
