Mozambique has made considerable progress in terms of water supply in recent years. In many parts of Mozambique, however, access to clean drinking water and sanitary facilities is still a great luxury – even though water is actually a basic right. In the rural areas of Cabo Delgado and Nampula in northern Mozambique, only around 30% of people have access to safe drinking water. The consequences are devastating: diseases such as diarrhea are still one of the most common causes of death among young children. The lack of sanitary facilities means that diseases spread quickly, causing schoolchildren to miss lessons. Menstruating girls are also particularly affected by the lack of sanitary facilities, as they often miss school altogether during their menstruation.
Our focus in Mozambique is on expanding the drinking water supply and raising awareness of important hygiene measures. In October 2024, a joint team from STELP and Viva con Agua Switzerland monitored the progress of our projects on the ground.
