The situation on the Greek island of Chios remains tense. Refugees from countries such as Yemen and Somalia arrive on the island in the hope of safety and a life in dignity. Instead, the opposite often awaits them: insecurity, lack of supplies and daily waiting in inhumane camps.
Many of the camp residents do not have access to sufficient food or hygiene products, even though these are basic necessities.
Little attention paid to the situation on Chios
Together with our partners from Refugee Biriyanibananas, we were recently able to organize a large distribution in the Vial Camp: We provided over 1,700 people with food and hygiene products. The local team is experienced in coordinating such large distributions and knows the needs of the community inside out.
Chios is one of the least recognized Greek islands. There is a lack of volunteers, NGOs and attention in general. This makes it all the more important to stand by the local refugees, support them and send them a message: You are not alone.
